Our History

Where we have come from helps explain who we are.

The beginning

The story starts with the 1972 film Stone, written by and starring Sandy Harbutt, about a fictional bike club of Vietnam veterans. The Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club (VVMC) was formed in Queensland on 18 August 1990, with seven members.

In 1993 a memorial run for Stone finished with a ceremonial burning of the original jackets.

Growing north

A northern branch was agreed in 1994, and the Townsville Chapter was formed in 2003. In 2012 a Veterans M.C. was created within the VVMC, open to veterans from all conflicts since Vietnam.

Today

The Townsville Chapter closed on 20 July 2023. The remaining members formed 22 Australia, which closed after only a few months because the members' values did not line up.

The group then became Townsville Veterans Australia. We cut our ties with motorcycle clubs, and we operate with fewer rules. Our purpose has not changed: veterans supporting veterans.
